A Rationale for Hypoxic and Chemical Conditioning in Huntington's Disease

Johannes Burtscher et al.

Summary: Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by adverse cellular environments and pathological alterations leading to neurodegeneration in distinct brain regions, triggered or facilitated by conditions such as hypoxia, ischemia or inflammation. Specific reversal methods for these pathological changes are difficult to translate to clinical settings, thus holistic approaches to establish a healthy cellular environment may be more effective. This review discusses potential molecular pathways as drug targets in neurodegenerative diseases, with a focus on Huntington's disease characteristics that may make it suitable for conditioning techniques.

Hypoxia Conditioning as a Promising Therapeutic Target in Parkinson's Disease?

Johannes Burtscher et al.

Summary: Several lines of research suggest that low oxygen supply plays a key role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease. While severe hypoxia is harmful for the brain, physiological adaptations to mild hypoxia are neuroprotective. The discussion focuses on how neuroprotective effects can be induced through hypoxia conditioning and potentially used as therapeutic strategies for Parkinson's disease.
