Scaling Behavior of Fracture Properties of Tough Adhesive Hydrogels

Xiang Ni et al.

Summary: Tough adhesive hydrogels have high resistance against both cohesion and adhesion failure, but their fracture properties may deteriorate when they swell upon exposure to water. The correlation between polymer fraction and fracture properties of tough adhesive hydrogels is still largely unexplored. This study investigates how cohesion and adhesion energies of tough adhesive hydrogels evolve with the swelling process, showing a scaling law of these quantities as a function of the polymer fraction. The results from scaling analysis and computational study suggest that the scaling of shear modulus plays a key role in this relationship, which can provide guidelines for the development of next-generation tough adhesive hydrogels.

Hemostatic and antibacterial PVA/Kaolin composite sponges loaded with penicillin-streptomycin for wound dressing applications

Tamer M. Tamer et al.

Summary: A new hemostatic and antibacterial PVA/Kaolin composite sponge was developed using a freeze-thawing approach and enhanced by Pen-Strep. The physicochemical characteristics were analyzed, showing a porous structure and improved thermal properties of the sponge with high dispersion of kaolin. The composite sponge exhibited enhanced water absorption, antibacterial activity, and no cellular toxicity, indicating its potential application as a multifunctional wound dressing.

Poly(α-L-lysine)-based nanomaterials for versatile biomedical applications: Current advances and perspectives

Maochao Zheng et al.

Summary: Poly(alpha-L-lysine) (PLL) is a water-soluble, cationic biopolymer composed of alpha-L-lysine structural units. Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in the synthesis and biomedical applications of PLL, including antibacterial agents, gene/drug/protein delivery systems, bio-sensing, bio-imaging, and tissue engineering. Despite the promising potential of PLL-based nanomaterials in biomedical fields, challenges and perspectives still need to be addressed.
