SARS-CoV-2-derived peptides define heterologous and COVID-19-induced T cell recognition

Annika Nelde et al.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2-specific T cell epitopes were identified in convalescent and unexposed individuals, showing cross-reactivity with common cold coronaviruses. The diversity of SARS-CoV-2 T cell responses may be associated with mild symptoms of COVID-19.

Cutting Edge: Mouse SARS-CoV-2 Epitope Reveals Infection and Vaccine-Elicited CD8 T Cell Responses

Vineet Joag et al.

Summary: The strength of SARS-CoV-2-specific T cell responses is negatively correlated with disease severity, suggesting a role for T cells in primary control. Vaccine-induced T cell immunity may enhance durable protection and cross-reactivity with viral variants. Identification of a dominant CD8 T cell SARS-CoV-2 nucleoprotein epitope in mice enabled better mechanistic and vaccination studies.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Xuanjun Wu et al.

Summary: A synthetic MUC1-beta-Tf with enhanced stability was developed by altering the stereochemistry of the glycan/peptide linkage, leading to high levels of IgG antibodies in clinically relevant human MUC1 transgenic mice and recognizing MUC1 expressing tumor cells. This suggests a potential strategy for anti-cancer vaccine epitope design for glycopeptides.

Synthesis and immunological evaluation of synthetic peptide based anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidates

Qingyu Zhao et al.

Summary: Peptide epitopes from the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 were synthesized and linked with CRM197 to immunize mice, leading to high titers of IgG antibodies that effectively neutralized SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus. This study suggests that the identified epitopes are protective and the conjugates are promising for the development of an anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccine.
