The More, the Better-Recent Advances in Construction of 2D Multi-Heterostructures

Ruijie Zhang et al.

Summary: In recent years, significant advancements have been made in the controlled growth of 2D heterostructures, with a focus on vertical and lateral structures. While vertical heterostructures allow for customizable properties through layer-by-layer formation, challenges persist in fabricating lateral heterostructures. Utilizing the concept of epitaxial growth, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) plays a key role in forming 2D lateral heterostructures. Academic breakthroughs in controlled growth of multi-heterostructures by CVD technique offer guidelines for shaping novel 2D heterostructures, with the potential to drive industrialization and commercialization of 2D materials.

A Hippocampus-Inspired Dual-Gated Organic Artificial Synapse for Simultaneous Sensing of a Neurotransmitter and Light

Hae Rang Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, a dual-gate organic synaptic transistor inspired by hippocampal synapses was developed to detect neurotransmitter dopamine and light simultaneously, showing effective memory consolidation upon exposure to dopamine and polychromatic light. This proof-of-concept organic neuromorphic system combining a chemical sensor and a photosensor opens new possibilities for developing low-power artificial synaptic multisensors and light-induced memory consolidative artificial synapses, contributing to the development of human-machine interfaces.

Intrinsic polarization coupling in 2D α-In2Se3 toward artificial synapse with multimode operations

Jing Gao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of 2D ferroelectric alpha-In2Se3 as an active channel material to emulate typical synaptic functions. The synaptic device features multimode operations enabled by coupled ferroelectric polarization under various voltage pulses applied at both drain and gate terminals, with energy consumption reduced to around 1 pJ by using high-kappa dielectric. The successful control of ferroelectric polarizations in alpha-In2Se3 and its application in artificial synapses are expected to inspire the implementation of 2D ferroelectric materials for future neuromorphic systems.
