Increased efficiency gyroid structures by tailored material distribution

David Downing et al.

Summary: The study found that under uniaxial loading, loads predominantly distribute within helical substructures of the solid-surface gyroid, and the mechanical response can be tuned by adjusting the thickness of the load-carrying helical regions. This novel discovery enables more efficient use of material distribution.

Direct comparison of 3D and 2D cultivation reveals higher osteogenic capacity of elderly osteoblasts in 3D

Stephan Payr et al.

Summary: In this study, human primary osteoblasts from advanced donors showed higher levels of OPG, Col1, and OP gene expression in 3D culture compared to monolayer. This suggests that elderly osteoblasts may still possess a relatively high potential for bone formation in a natural 3D arrangement.

The impact of multimodal pore size considered independently from porosity on mechanical performance and osteogenic behaviour of titanium scaffolds

C. Torres-Sanchez et al.

Summary: Titanium porous scaffolds with different pore sizes were studied for their effects on osteoblastogenesis, with the conclusion that pore sizes of 106-212 µm and 300-500 µm achieved the best cell maturation effects, while bimodal structures with small and large pore sizes distributed distinctively and having 40% actual porosity outperformed others.

The local and global geometry of trabecular bone

Sebastien J. P. Callens et al.

Summary: This research analyzes the local and global geometry of human trabecular bone through quantifying surface curvatures and Minkowski functionals, showing that curvature density maps provide distinct shape fingerprints for bones from different sites. The Minkowski analysis illustrates that trabecular bone exhibits other types of anisotropy/ellipticity beyond interfacial orientation and that anisotropy varies substantially within the trabecular structure.
