Redirected Zn Electrodeposition by an Anti-Corrosion Elastic Constraint for Highly Reversible Zn Anodes

Ruirui Zhao et al.

Summary: An anti-corrosion elastic constraint (AEC) consisting of nanosized TiO2 and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix was introduced to address the issues of dendrite formation and sustained corrosion in Zn metal anodes for aqueous batteries. This coating significantly improved the electrodeposition consistency and thermodynamic stability of the Zn anode, enabling long-term stable plating/stripping performance with high efficiency and no dendrite formation.

Direct Self-Assembly of MXene on Zn Anodes for Dendrite-Free Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Nannan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, an ultrathin and uniform MXene layer was assembled on the surface of zinc anodes using an in situ spontaneously reducing/assembling strategy. The integrated MXene layer reduced the zinc nucleation energy barrier and provided a more uniformly distributed electric field, resulting in low voltage hysteresis and excellent cycling stability with dendrite-free behaviors in zinc-ion batteries.

A four-electron Zn-I2 aqueous battery enabled by reversible I-/I2/I+ conversion

Yiping Zou et al.

Summary: In this study, a four-electron aqueous zinc-iodine battery was developed by enhancing the iodine electrochemistry using a specially designed electrolyte. Experimental characterization and modeling showed that limited water activity and sufficient free chloride ions in the electrolyte are crucial for the four-electron process. The advantages of the electrolyte also help stabilize the zinc anode, leading to a high energy density and reliable cycling performance for the Zn-I-2 aqueous battery.

Stable Aqueous Anode-Free Zinc Batteries Enabled by Interfacial Engineering

Yongling An et al.

Summary: Anode-free zinc batteries (AFZBs) have great potential as energy storage systems due to their high energy density, inherent safety, low cost, and simplified fabrication process. However, rapid capacity fading caused by side reactions hinders their practical applications. Aqueous AFZBs enabled by electrolyte engineering with a stable interphase are designed to address these issues. Introducing a multifunctional zinc fluoride (ZnF2) additive into the electrolyte helps to form a stable F-rich interfacial layer, improving cycling performance and longevity of AFZBs.
