Population of Exciton-Polaritons via Luminescent sp3 Defects in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Jan M. Luettgens et al.

Summary: Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are ideal for strong-light matter coupling due to their stable excitons, narrow emission, and high charge carrier mobilities. By controlling the introduction of luminescent quantum defects, SWCNTs have become quantum light sources capable of single-photon emission. Radiative pumping is identified as the predominant mechanism for populating SWCNT exciton-polaritons in planar microcavities, leading to increased polariton population. The controlled functionalization of SWCNTs with luminescent defects presents a promising route towards bright and efficient polariton devices.

Electroluminescence from 4-nitroaryl organic color centers in semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes

Beibei Xu et al.

Summary: This study experimentally observed near-infrared electroluminescence from organic color-centers intentionally introduced on single-wall carbon nanotubes aligned across a pair of gold electrodes. The electroluminescent quantum defects show potential for electrical pumping and on-chip integration, paving the way for potential applications of OCCs in display, sensor, and spin-based devices, as well as other quantum technologies.

Summary: The study introduces the potential of employing single-walled carbon nanotubes with luminescent defects as quantum-light sources in the near-infrared. A simple reaction protocol is proposed to create only one type of luminescent defect in nanotubes with longer photoluminescence lifetimes.
