Synthesis and photovoltaic performance of a non-fullerene acceptor comprising siloxane-terminated alkoxyl side chain

Zhuhao Wu et al.

Summary: Side chain engineering is an effective strategy to enhance the photovoltaic performance of non-fullerene acceptors. A novel non-fullerene small molecular acceptor, iIEOSi-4F, with a siloxane-terminated alkoxyl side chain was successfully synthesized, showing promising optical and electronic properties. The combination of siloxane-terminated side chain on both polymer donor and small molecular acceptor demonstrated significantly improved power conversion efficiency in polymer solar cells.

Calculation aided miscibility manipulation enables highly efficient polythiophene:nonfullerene photovoltaic cells

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: Polythiophenes, known for their low cost and high synthesis scalability, have gained attention in organic solar cell research. However, their performance in polythiophene:nonfullerene blend solar cells is hindered by poor miscibility between polythiophene and acceptors, necessitating efforts in engineering the molecular structure for better compatibility. Through group contribution calculations, the miscibility of these blends has been successfully adjusted by altering the ratios of specific chains in ester-substituted polythiophenes, leading to record-high power conversion efficiencies.

Layer-by-Layer Processed Ternary Organic Photovoltaics with Efficiency over 18%

Lingling Zhan et al.

Summary: This study proposes and demonstrates a method to optimize the morphology of the active layer in organic photovoltaic devices by combining the layer-by-layer (LbL) procedure and the ternary strategy. By adding an asymmetric electron acceptor to the binary donor:acceptor host, a vertical phase distribution is formed, leading to improved efficiency in OPV devices.

Over 15% efficiency all-small-molecule organic solar cells enabled by a C-shaped small molecule donor with tailorable asymmetric backbone

Xunchang Wang et al.

Summary: This study introduces two C-shaped SM donors with asymmetric central cores, which exhibit matched absorption and energy levels with the acceptor Y6, leading to outstanding power conversion efficiency in ASM-OSCs. The asymmetric core design allows the SM donor to easily penetrate neighboring Y6 molecules, preventing rapid aggregation and large domains of single components in blends. This innovative approach paves the way for highly efficient ASM-OSCs.

15.3% Efficiency All-Small-Molecule Organic Solar Cells Achieved by a Locally Asymmetric F, Cl Disubstitution Strategy

Dingqin Hu et al.

Summary: A new asymmetric acceptor, BTP-FCl-FCl, was designed and synthesized to achieve a record efficiency of 15.3% for single-junction binary ASM organic solar cells by matching with a high-performance small molecule donor. The locally asymmetric structure of BTP-FCl-FCl resulted in improved charge generation and extraction, contributing to the enhanced performance of the devices.

Replacing alkyl side chain of non-fullerene acceptor with siloxane-terminated side chain enables lower surface energy towards optimizing bulk-heterojunction morphology and high photovoltaic performance

Rihang Qiu et al.

Summary: In this study, two novel NFAs with alkyl and siloxane-terminated side chains were synthesized, showing that the siloxane-terminated side chains could lower surface energy, improve miscibility with polymer donors, and enhance the efficiency of polymer solar cells by controlling the morphology of the BHJ active layers. This side chain engineering strategy has shown great potential in optimizing donor-acceptor blend systems for efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport in PSCs.

Binary non-fullerene-based polymer solar cells with a 430 nm thick active layer showing 15.39% efficiency and 73.38% fill factor

Feilong Pan et al.

Summary: This study proposes a solution to the thickness-sensitive fill factor (FF) issue in thick-film polymer solar cells by pairing high-hole mobility polymer donor Si25 with benzotriazole-fused Y-series non-fullerene acceptor Y14. The combined films showed higher electron mobility values and balanced charge transport, leading to improved PSCs performance with reduced FF decay. The results suggest that high mu(h) polymers and benzotriazole-fused Y-series non-fullerene acceptors are promising candidates to overcome the thickness sensitivity of FF.
