Visualizing Ligand-Mediated Bimetallic Nanocrystal Formation Pathways with in Situ Liquid-Phase Transmission Electron Microscopy Synthesis

Mei Wang et al.

Summary: This study successfully demonstrated the in situ controlled synthesis of alloyed AuCu nanocrystals under LP-TEM, while maintaining the molecular structure of metal thiolate complexes. The research revealed that polymer capping ligands not only have known functions during LP-TEM synthesis, but also prevent copper oxidation and facilitate the formation of prenucleation cluster intermediates.

Enhancing and Mitigating Radiolytic Damage to Soft Matter in Aqueous Phase Liquid-Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy in the Presence of Gold Nanoparticle Sensitizers or Isopropanol Scavengers

Joanna Korpanty et al.

Summary: In the study, the radiolytic environment experienced by a polymer in water during LCTEM was examined, showing the significant mitigation effect of IPA on polymer damage and the enhancement effect of GNPs. The combination of experiments and simulations provided a generalizable strategy for assessing radiolysis mitigation or enhancement. The study highlights the caution needed for LCTEM experiments involving inorganic nanoparticles and suggests an increased use of scavengers for various LCTEM studies.

Liquid Phase Electron Microscopy Provides Opportunities in Polymer Synthesis and Manufacturing

Wyeth Gibson et al.

Summary: Liquid phase electron microscopy is a rapidly developing method for imaging chemical processes in solution, utilizing high energy electrons as both an energy and illumination source. The knowledge obtained from LP-EM has the potential to guide industrial electron beam technologies, enabling the design, optimization, and manufacturing of nanostructured polymeric materials. Challenges and opportunities for utilizing LP-EM in conjunction with electron beam manufacturing technologies are discussed in this Perspective.
