Defect Engineering for Tuning the Photoresponse of Ceria-Based Solid Oxide Photoelectrochemical Cells

Yanuo Shi et al.

Summary: Solid oxide photoelectrochemical cells with inorganic ion-conducting electrolytes offer an alternative solution for light harvesting and conversion. Ceria-based thin films were investigated as photoelectrodes for SOPEC applications, with their photoresponse tuned by Sm-doping induced defects and SOPEC heating temperature. The role of defect chemistry engineering in determining the photoelectrochemical process was discussed, providing a compelling explanation of the experimentally observed switching behavior.

Summary: The study investigated the electron transfer activation energy of the cerium redox couple using density functional theory, which correlated well with experimental data. The influence of the ratio of methanesulfonic acid and sulfuric acid in the mixed supporting electrolytes on the cerium redox reaction was found to be minimal.

Electrochemical Eu(III)/Eu(II) behaviors and recovery over terpyridyl-derivatized modified indium tin oxide electrode surfaces

So Jeong Park et al.

Summary: Understanding the electrochemical behaviors of lanthanide (Ln) ions is crucial for the treatment of radioactive materials and Ln-containing industry waste. In this study, the electrochemical behavior of Eu(III)/Eu(II) ions and their recovery were investigated over terpyridine-functionalized indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, providing valuable information for the development of electrodes for the treatment of Ln and other related elements. Characterization and density functional theory calculations were performed to optimize the geometry and electronic energy state of Eu(III) and Eu(II) ions complexed with functionalized groups on the electrodes.

Electrochemical Eu(III) behaviours and Eu oxysulfate recovery over terpyridine-functionalized indium tin oxide electrodes

So Jeong Park et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the electrochemical behaviors of Eu(III)/Eu(II) ions in NaClO4 electrolyte over bare and terpyridine (Tpy)-functionalized indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes for the recovery of lanthanide elements. The results showed that Eu(III) ion was recovered as EuSO4 and Tpy-functionalized ITO exhibited a higher recovery performance. Further analysis was conducted to fully examine the physiochemical properties of the recovered materials.

A hydrolytically stable Ce(iv) complex of glutarimide-dioxime

Qiaomu Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that the anion H(2)A(-) can stabilize Ce(IV) and form a tridentate complex with cerium, oxidizing Ce-III to Ce-IV under aerobic conditions. UV-Vis spectroscopy, DFT calculations, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy were used to characterize the electronic structure and oxidation state of the cerium complexes. Despite the lack of clear electrochemical signal for cerium reduction, DFT calculations predicted a Ce(iii/iv) redox couple of -1.22 V vs. Fc/Fc(+). These results expand the understanding of the coordination chemistry of glutarimide-dioxime to include tetravalent cerium.
