Temperature and the size of freshwater phytoplankton

Tamar Zohary et al.

Summary: The literature review found that freshwater phytoplankton become smaller with increasing water temperature, in line with Bergmann's Rule. Experimental and field evidence support this hypothesis, with exceptions mostly explained by indirect effects of temperature on phytoplankton size.

Germ lines and extended selection during the evolutionary transition to multicellularity

Caroline J. Rose

Summary: The major evolutionary transitions from unicellular organisms to multicellularity resulted in a profusion of complex life forms. One key aspect of this transition is the development of multicellular reproductive capacity, which operates on a different timescale than that of single cells. The emergence of specialized reproductive cells, such as the germ line, was essential for natural selection to operate over the longer timescale of a multicellular life cycle.

Shrinking body sizes in response to warming: explanations for the temperature-size rule with special emphasis on the role of oxygen

Wilco C. E. P. Verberk et al.

Summary: Body size plays a central role in ecology, with temperature-induced variations in body size being of interest. The temperature-size rule states that warmer conditions tend to result in smaller body sizes at maturity. Oxygen limitation may play a significant role in this response.

Life-history traits display strong associations to genome size in annelids

Nicholas Beaudreau et al.

Summary: This study assesses the relationships between genome size and life-history traits in six interstitial marine annelid species of the genus Ophryotrocha, with additional data from 18 annelid species for broader phylogenetic comparison. Unexpectedly, genome sizes in Ophryotrocha species were found to be larger than previously reported, challenging the hypothesis of small genomes in meiofaunal annelids in harsh interstitial habitats. Positive relationships were observed between genome size and nucleus size, age at first egg mass deposition, body size, and lifespan within Ophryotrocha, and these relationships held up in the broader phylogenetic comparison, highlighting the important role of genome size in the evolution of life-history traits in annelids.

Summary: This study reports a novel in vitro colchicine-induced chromosome doubling protocol that effectively converts diploid D. cariniferum protocorms into tetraploids, with 120 tetraploid genotypes identified by flow cytometry. Tetraploids displayed obvious morphological and anatomical variations compared to diploids, as well as a 1.75-fold greater genome size.

Making sense of virus size and the tradeoffs shaping viral fitness

Kyle F. Edwards et al.

Summary: Viruses exhibit an impressive range of sizes, with varying genome lengths and virion volumes. The size of viruses can influence infection efficiency, host range, and overall fitness, leading to a diversity of sizes coexisting in the same host populations. Oligotrophic ecosystems may be enriched in giant viruses, as they may select for broader host range, better control of host metabolism, and lower decay rates.

Phenotype and ploidy evaluation of colchicine-inducedEcheveria'Peerless'

Raisa Aone M. Cabahug et al.

Summary: Treatment with colchicine induced morphological changes in “Echeveria 'Peerless', producing more compact mutant plants with thicker and shorter leaves. Survival rates over 50% were achieved with 0.2-0.6% colchicine for 3-12 hours, while creating diploid-tetraploid mixoploids. This method provides a novel genetic source for developing new cultivars in Echeveria breeding.

Polyploidy: an evolutionary and ecological force in stressful times

Yves Van de Peer et al.

Summary: Polyploidy is hypothesized to play a role in both evolutionary dead-ends and diversification. Research suggests that whole-genome duplications may be linked with extinction events or global changes, while polyploids thrive in harsh environments. Biotic interactions, particularly with pathogens or mutualists, have differing effects on polyploids compared to nonpolyploids. Stress response is identified as a key factor in the establishment and success of polyploidy.
