Progressive interstitial lung disease in patients with systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease in the EUSTAR database

Anna-Maria Hoffmann-Vold et al.

Summary: This study utilized data from the European Scleroderma Trials And Research (EUSTAR) database to analyze the disease course, progression patterns, and predictive factors for progressive interstitial lung disease (ILD) in patients with systemic sclerosis-associated ILD (SSc-ILD). The results showed that male sex, higher modified Rodnan skin score, and reflux/dysphagia symptoms were the strongest predictive factors for forced vital capacity (FVC) decline over a 5-year period in SSc-ILD patients.

Interstitial lung disease in patients with antisynthetase syndrome: a retrospective case series study

Elisa Baratella et al.

Summary: Antisynthetase syndrome (ASS) is a rare autoimmune condition associated with anti-aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase antibodies, often presenting as interstitial lung disease (ILD). HRCT findings in ASS-associated ILD are typically non-specific, but should be considered in patients with acute onset of symptoms.

Estimation of the Prevalence of Progressive Fibrosing Interstitial Lung Diseases: Systematic Literature Review and Data from a Physician Survey

Amy Olson et al.

Summary: Through a systematic review of ILD prevalence, it was found that 13-40% of ILDs may progress to a fibrosing phenotype, with overall prevalence estimates of 2.2-20.0 per 100,000 in Europe and 28.0 per 100,000 in the USA for progressive fibrosing ILDs. Prevalence estimates for individual progressive fibrosing ILDs varied up to 16.7 per 100,000 people. These conditions represent a significant portion of chronic respiratory disorders and have high unmet needs.

The History and Mystery of Alveolar Epithelial Type II Cells: Focus on Their Physiologic and Pathologic Role in Lung

Barbara Ruaro et al.

Summary: ATII cells in the lung play essential roles in both physiological and pathological processes, serving as regulators of immune response, progenitors of alveolar epithelial repair, and protectors against pathogen exposure through the secretion of surfactant proteins. Additionally, they can contribute to fibroproliferative reactions post-injury.

The Treatment of Lung Involvement in Systemic Sclerosis

Barbara Ruaro et al.

Summary: Systemic sclerosis patients often suffer from interstitial lung disease, with early diagnosis playing a pivotal role in improving prognosis. Treatment strategies typically involve a combination of immunosuppressants and targeted biological therapies based on disease severity and progression risk. Hematopoietic autologous stem cell transplantation has shown benefits for progressive SSc patients, while lung transplantation is considered for refractory cases of SSc-ILD.

Digital Ulcers in Systemic Sclerosis

Michael Hughes et al.

Summary: Digital ulcers are a common complication of Systemic Sclerosis-related vasculopathy, posing a significant burden for patients and society. Treatment of DU requires a multidisciplinary team and patient education, with several drugs currently available for management. Further research is needed to improve approaches and therapies for DU in the future.

The role of ultrasound in systemic sclerosis: On the cutting edge to foster clinical and research advancement

Michael Hughes et al.

Summary: Ultrasound technology has been widely used in the study of systemic sclerosis, providing non-invasive and radiation-free insights into the disease. While offering novel perspectives on disease pathogenesis and measurement, there are still unmet needs that must be addressed for ultrasound to play a more central role in the clinical care and research of systemic sclerosis.

Lung magnetic resonance imaging in systemic sclerosis: a new promising approach to evaluate pulmonary involvement and progression

Luna Gargani et al.

Summary: This study found that lung MRI can detect SSc-related ILD, with STIR values able to independently predict worsening lung involvement. This suggests that in the near future, MRI could support the choice for an early treatment of SSc-related ILD, as well as a more appropriate use of HRCT.
