Transcriptomics reveals the action mechanisms and cellular targets of citrate-coated silver nanoparticles in a ubiquitous aquatic fungus

Summary: The study revealed distinct patterns of gene expression in aquatic fungi exposed to AgNPs and Ag+, suggesting different toxicity mechanisms for each silver form. AgNPs upregulated genes related to transport, nucleobase metabolism, and energy production, while Ag+ upregulated genes associated with carbohydrate and steroid metabolism. The results highlight the importance of transcriptomics in understanding the stress induced by different silver forms on organisms.

Summary: Endophytic fungi can develop survival strategies to cope with copper and other heavy metal contaminants, with copper-tolerant strains like Fusarium oxysporum showing unique gene expression patterns involved in copper ion import, oxidoreductase activity, and oxidative stress response. Catalase inhibition decreases copper tolerance in the tolerant strain, while antioxidants prevent copper-dependent growth inhibition in non-tolerant strains, highlighting the importance of oxidative stress response in copper tolerance.
