Characterization and pre-breeding of diverse alfalfa wild relatives originating from drought-stressed environments

Medicago sativa species complex: Revisiting the century-old problem in the light of molecular tools

The complex taxonomic group known as the M. sativa-falcata species complex is distributed throughout northern Eurasia and has been a subject of study due to economic importance. Early classification based on morphology was proved contradictory, and molecular tools led to reclassification of taxa to subspecific level.

Breeding gain from exploitation of regional adaptation: An alfalfa case study

Summary: This study confirmed that specific selection for subregions with contrasting GEI patterns can contribute to more productive and sustainable cropping systems, with at least twofold greater yield gains for specific adaptation over wide adaptation. Genotypic selections displayed over 10-fold greater yield progress than phenotypic selections, emphasizing the importance of breeding for specific adaptation to achieve yield progress over locally top-performing commercial varieties.
