Middle to Late Pleistocene environments based on stable organic carbon and nitrogen isotopes of loess-palaeosol sequences from the Carpathian Basin

Stephan Poetter et al.

Summary: Stable organic carbon and nitrogen isotopes were used to reconstruct the past environment in the southern Carpathian Basin, highlighting the importance of decalcification methods for accurate carbon isotope analysis in loess-palaeosol sequences. The study found that the choice of decalcification method affects the results significantly, with the fumigation method showing incomplete removal of carbonates. Results also indicated that samples with TOC content <0.2% have a higher risk of misinterpretation of their carbon isotope ratios.

Loess landscapes of Europe-Mapping, geomorphology, and zonal differentiation

F. Lehmkuhl et al.

Summary: The article discusses three main depositional regimes for loess formation in Europe and the influences of geomorphology and paleoenvironment on Late Pleistocene loess deposition and preservation. Criteria for dividing loess regions are proposed, and a new map of aeolian sediments distribution in Europe is presented for paleoenvironmental and archaeological studies.

Filling of sedimentary basins and the birth of large rivers: The lower Danube network in the Dacian Basin, Romania

Csaba Krersek et al.

Summary: Large rivers typically form in the final phase of evolution of sedimentary basins, influenced by factors such as tectonics, sediment supply, and accommodation. Using the Danube River in the Carpathians foreland basin as a case study, this paper discusses the controlling factors that lead to the birth of large, continental-scale rivers.

Magnetic Susceptibility Properties of Loess From the Willendorf Archaeological Site: Implications for the Syn/Post-Depositional Interpretation of Magnetic Fabric

Christian Zeeden et al.

Summary: The study at the Willendorf site reveals Upper Paleolithic archeological layers associated with early Aurignacian cultures potentially co-existing with Neanderthal groups, but the environmental conditions of the society are not fully understood. Environmental magnetic analyses on loessic aeolian sediments show magnetic enhancement and fabric properties similar to other European loess geoarchives, but with different magnetic mineralogy. Post-depositional magnetic fabric alterations towards the Danube may obscure inferences on palaeo-wind direction and could occur at other similar localities.
