Sepsis and Septic Shock Definitions in Patients With Cancer Admitted in ICU

Neveux Nathan et al.

Summary: Research indicates that the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score is more accurate in predicting hospital mortality of infected patients than the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) criteria, and the new definition of sepsis and septic shock demonstrates the same reliability in cancer patients as in the general population.

Prognostic performance of qSOFA in oncology patients admitted to the emergency department with suspected infection

Tze Lui Koh et al.

Summary: The study found that oncology patients presenting to the ED with a qSOFA score >= 2 had a higher likelihood of respiratory infections and were more likely to be admitted to the ICU or require mechanical ventilation. Patients with a qSOFA score < 2 had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality and prolonged ICU stay.

Inappropriate empirical antibiotic therapy for bloodstream infections based on discordant in-vitro susceptibilities: a retrospective cohort analysis of prevalence, predictors, and mortality risk in US hospitals

Sameer S. Kadri et al.

Summary: Approximately one in five patients with bloodstream infections in US hospitals received discordant empirical antibiotic therapy, which was closely associated with increased odds of mortality. Early identification of bloodstream pathogens and resistance will probably improve population-level outcomes.
