One-dollar microfluidic paper-based analytical devices: Do-It-Yourself approaches

Hardik Ramesh Singhal et al.

Summary: Paper-based devices for analytical applications have attracted researchers' interest due to their portability, versatility, and ease of interpretation, despite the barrier posed by sophisticated manufacturing techniques for widespread adoption in low-cost settings. Recent efforts have been made towards developing cost-effective paper-based analytical devices, with emphasis on utilizing readily available stationaries for fabrication. Additionally, the use of various low-cost or off-the-shelf equipment for creating hydrophobic barriers, electrodes, and housing for old detection techniques on plain paper has been explored in this review.

Simple biodegradable plastic screen-printing for microfluidic paper-based analytical devices

Jaruwan Mettakoonpitak et al.

Summary: The introduction of screen-printed biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) as a simple, low-cost, and non-toxic alternative approach to create microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) allowed for the successful detection of Cr3+ and Cl-. The method achieved high selectivity in Cr3+ detection and utilized a distance-based pattern for Cr determination, resulting in accurate results compared to traditional titration methods at a 95% confidence level when applied to CF analysis in instant noodle seasonings.

Portable microfluidic device with thermometer-like display for real-time visual quantitation of Cadmium(II) contamination in drinking water

Gaobo Wang et al.

Summary: A portable microfluidic device with thermometer-like visual readouts has been developed for real-time quantitation of cadmium (II) contamination in drinking water. The device uses Cd2+-dependent DNAzyme to trigger catalytic hairpin assembly for particle connection, and provides a visual readout for Cd2+ concentration detection by the naked eye.
