Disorder effects in topological insulator thin films

Yi Huang et al.

Summary: Translation: Thin films of topological insulators have attracted attention due to expected topological effects from Dirac points. However, the energy smearing of surface Dirac points by Coulomb impurities may deplete these effects. An investigation found that the Coulomb potential modification allows a larger number of film impurities to contribute to energy smearing, resulting in a greater value that does not depend on film thickness beyond 5 nm. In thinner films, energy smearing grows with decreasing thickness due to reduced screening by hybridization gap. The study also analyzed surface conductivity at neutrality point and found the maximum film thickness for observing quantum spin Hall effect.
