Mechanistic Insight of Allantoin in Protecting Tomato Plants Against Ultraviolet C Stress

Summary: The study revealed that pre-treatment with allantoin significantly mitigated the toxic effects of UVC stress on tomato plants by enhancing chlorophyll, soluble protein, and soluble carbohydrate contents, leading to improved plant growth and biomass. Furthermore, allantoin pre-treatment also increased endogenous allantoin and allantoate content, as well as various antioxidants, resulting in reduced oxidative stress markers compared to only stressed plants.

The findings suggest that low to moderate salinity treatments can increase phenolic compounds and induce glucosinolates in these vegetables.
