Using aerial fruit-baited traps with different naturally fermented baits to survey scarab beetles in the Amazon rainforest

Summary: In the Amazon rainforest, scarab beetles showed a preference for sugarcane juice as bait, which proved to be more efficient in capturing a higher number of individuals and species. Therefore, it is recommended to use sugarcane juice as bait in aerial fruit-baited traps, as it is cost-effective and easier to use than when combined with fruits. This study also provided a list of scarab beetle species sampled in the Amazon rainforest using a method that is still underutilized in scarab beetle diversity surveys.

Development of a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for the identification of the invasive wood borer Aromia bungii (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) from frass

Summary: The red-necked longhorn beetle Aromia bungii is a major pest of cultivated and ornamental species of the genus Prunus in East Asia. While traditional methods require morphological or molecular discrimination to identify this wood borer, non-invasive molecular diagnostic tools can be applied to biological traces for detection without causing extensive plant damage. The study presents a protocol using real-time and visual loop-mediated isothermal amplification for detecting A. bungii DNA extracted from larval frass, demonstrating robustness and high sensitivity in laboratory validations. The visual LAMP protocol could be a useful tool for rapid monitoring and outbreak management of A. bungii.

Evaluation of Trapping Schemes to Detect Emerald Ash Borer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae)

Summary: Management responses to invasive forest insects are improved with the use of detection traps baited with species-specific semiochemicals. Research on monitoring tools for the Emerald ash borer has led to the development of a region-wide phenology model and comparison of different trapping schemes for optimizing trap selection. The study found that trap catch varied across different levels of ash basal area, and could assist managers in optimizing trap selection, placement, and timing of deployment based on local conditions.

Usage of Fermental Traps for the Study of the Species Diversity of Coleoptera

Summary: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of using simple traps with fermenting bait to study tree crowns and undergrowth in forest ecosystems. Through research conducted in various regions of Russia between 2018 and 2020, a total of 294 species from 45 Coleoptera families were identified. The application of different methods to study Coleoptera biodiversity has led to unexpected and original results.
