Paracetamol extended release FDM 3D printlets: Evaluation of formulation variables on printability and drug release

Marija Duranovic et al.

Summary: Paracetamol printlets were prepared using hot-melt extrusion process and fused deposition modelling with PCL and PEO backbone polymers. The study showed that the backbone polymer plays a crucial role in obtaining printlets with desired properties. PEO-based filaments were more prone to clogging in the printcore, but exhibited faster drug release.

3D printed bilayer tablet with dual controlled drug release for tuberculosis treatment

Atabak Ghanizadeh Tabriz et al.

Summary: This study utilized Fusion Deposition Modelling (FDM) to design and fabricate a bilayer tablet for tuberculosis treatment, with one drug releasing in the stomach and another in the upper intestine. The bilayer tablet preparation involved hot melt extrusion and 3D printing, optimizing drug release and ensuring consistent drug-containing layers. The study demonstrated the potential application of FDM technology in developing personalized clinical treatment options for oral fixed-dose combinations.

Evaluation of exposure time and visible light irradiation in LCD 3D printing of ibuprofen extended release tablets

Marijana Madzarevic et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of printing ibuprofen extended release tablets under visible light irradiation, and found that visible light significantly improved printing speed and dimensional accuracy of tablets. Different wavelengths and exposure times had effects on tablet characteristics and ibuprofen release rate, with diffusion identified as the main mechanism of ibuprofen release.

3D printed spherical mini-tablets: Geometry versus composition effects in controlling dissolution from personalised solid dosage forms

Sejad Ayyoubi et al.

Summary: Oral dosage forms are widely used but can cause adverse effects due to standardized mass produced solid dosage forms. 3D printing allows for personalized medicine, as shown in the study focusing on hypertensive patients using nifedipine. The drug dissolution is more impacted by composition rather than geometry and surface area.
