A three-year large scale study on the risk of honey bee colony exposure to blooming sunflowers grown from seeds treated with thiamethoxam and clothianidin neonicotinoids

Jose M. Flores et al.

Summary: Despite the restriction of neonicotinoids in the EU, the debate on their risk to honey bees remains unsettled. A three-year study with 180 honey bee colonies exposed to different treatments of neonicotinoids on sunflower blooms showed initial negative effects, but the impact was not significant in the long term. The variability of colony health and development parameters were influenced more by the hive, replicate, and year than by the treatment factor.

Colony field test reveals dramatically higher toxicity of a widely-used mito-toxic fungicide on honey bees (Apis mellifera)

Adrian Fisher et al.

Summary: Research has shown that exposure to a commonly used fungicide, Pristine (R), can negatively impact honey bee individual and colony health, even at the lowest doses, including reducing worker lifespan and colony population size. The study found that under field conditions, the toxicity of Pristine (R) is enhanced, at least partially due to the activation of colonial nutritional responses missed by lab tests.

Apis mellifera and Melipona scutellaris exhibit differential sensitivity to thiamethoxam

Lucas Miotelo et al.

Summary: The study quantified the differential sensitivity of the stingless bee M. scutellaris and the honey bee A. mellifera to the insecticide thiamethoxam, showing that the stingless bee is more sensitive. Morphological and ultrastructural analyses revealed significant differences in nerve cell spaces between the two species when exposed to sublethal concentrations. The findings suggest that A. mellifera may not be the most suitable model for testing the toxicity of insecticides to stingless bees.

High-Fat Diets with Differential Fatty Acids Induce Obesity and Perturb Gut Microbiota in Honey Bee

Xiaofei Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that high-fat diets can affect the weight, survival rate, blood sugar, and fat accumulation of bees, while microbiota-free bees on high-fat diets did not show significant changes in their phenotype. Different fatty acid compositions in edible oils can alter the lipid profiles of bees.

Effects of developmental exposure to pesticides in wax and pollen on honey bee (Apis mellifera) queen reproductive phenotypes

Joseph P. Milone et al.

Summary: Research shows that multiple pesticides in beeswax can potentially impact the health of honey bee queens, with treated wax having comparable pesticide levels to commercial colonies. Exposure to pesticide-treated pollen can reduce the production capacity of viable queens and lower sperm viability. However, direct effects on queen phenotype were not observed, indicating potential indirect social consequences of colony-level pesticide exposure.

Concentration- and time-dependent toxicity of commonly encountered pesticides and pesticide mixtures to honeybees (Apis mellifera L.)

Vijayakumar Bommuraj et al.

Summary: This study investigated the time-dependent toxicities of pesticides found in Israeli beehives, with findings showing varying toxicities among different pesticides. DMPF and imidacloprid were identified as posing the greatest hazard to honeybees, while thiacloprid was the only pesticide that complied with Haber's rule.

Gut microbiota influence on oral bioaccessibility and intestinal transport of pesticides in Chaenomeles speciosa

Yan-Hong Shi et al.

Summary: Limited research has been conducted on the effects of human gut microbiota on the oral bioaccessibility and intestinal absorption of pesticide residues in food. This study found that gut microbiota play a dual role in contaminant release and metabolism, with Lactobacillus plantarum being a key bacterial species that significantly influences pesticide stability. The addition of L. plantarum to the system can reduce the relative amounts of pesticides, and the interaction between the food matrix and human gut microbiota leads to different absorption rates, with barrier effects increasing over time.

Microbial diversity is significantly reduced, potentially compromising the ecosystemic functionality of honeybees.

Screening of lactic acid bacteria for their capacity to bind cypermethrin in vitro and the binding characteristics and its application

Mengmei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study showed that Lactobacillus plantarum RS60 and Pediococcus acidilactici D15 have high cypermethrin removal capacity, even removing over 60% of the pesticide within a short period. Heat treatment can enhance the bacteria's binding rate with cypermethrin, and inactive cells are also effective in removing cypermethrin from fruit and vegetable juices.
