Homology and osteological correlates of pedal muscles among extant sauropsids

Soki Hattori et al.

Summary: Archosaurs showed increasing bipedalism during their evolutionary history, with hindlimbs becoming major weight-bearing appendages. Studies on homologies of pedal muscles among sauropsids revealed that some muscles between non-avian sauropsids and avians are homologous, challenging classical hypotheses. This new hypothesis postulates that certain avian and non-avian muscles are homologous, without drastic changes in attachment sites.
