Developing a locally balanced energy system for an existing neighbourhood, using the 'Smart Urban Isle' approach

Sabine Jansen et al.

Summary: This paper presents a step-by-step approach for generating various energy concepts for neighbourhoods based on local renewable resources. Through the systematic method introduced, the preferred energy concept for a residential neighbourhood in the Netherlands was developed, involving a local ultra-low temperature heat grid heated by decentralized PV-thermal collectors and connected to a collective seasonal underground storage.

Co-optimization and community: Maximizing the benefits of distributed electricity and water technologies

Erick C. Jones et al.

Summary: This study examines the potential of distributed water and energy technologies to reduce reliance on centralized infrastructures and household utility bills. By optimizing water and energy technology investments and transitioning to community-scale systems, the economic benefits of these technologies can be enhanced. Results show that pooling resources and demands at larger community scales leads to increased distributed electricity and water production, as well as reduced total costs. The cost and carbon emissions reduction benefits are significant, especially at higher aggregation levels.

Nigeria's quest for alternative clean energy development: A cobweb of opportunities, pitfalls and multiple dilemmas

Agaptus Nwozor et al.

Summary: This paper examines the opportunities, pitfalls, and dilemmas surrounding Nigeria's quest for alternative clean energy development, highlighting the gap between national energy transition targets and actual progress. It points to structural gaps, policy discordance, unfavorable investment climate, stakeholders' questionable commitment to renewable energy transition, and the challenge of attracting robust private investments as barriers to realizing the transition to green energy systems. The paper recommends institutional reforms to facilitate the real transition in the energy sector.

How to get rural households out of energy poverty in Nigeria: A contingent valuation

Eleanya Nduka

Summary: Although Nigeria has abundant sustainable energy resources, rural households still heavily rely on conventional energy due to the inability to afford upfront costs. By implementing an installment plan, investors can improve welfare in rural areas through sustainable energy projects. Additionally, rural households exhibit a strong preference for sustainable energy, providing potential economic benefits for investors.
