Understanding the dynamical-microphysical-electrical processes associated with severe thunderstorms over the Beijing metropolitan region

Xiushu Qie et al.

Summary: The STORM973 project conducted comprehensive field observations of thunderstorms in Beijing metropolitan region from 2014 to 2018, finding that squall lines and multicell storms are the two major categories of severe thunderstorms. It was also discovered that lightning activity can be used as an indicator of severe weather events.

Summary: In the SHAndong Triggering Lightning Experiment (SHATLE) in north China, a 3D low-frequency lightning mapping network with eight stations is deployed. The effective and stable acquisition of electromagnetic radiation data from lightning is achieved through real-time monitoring of acquisition speed, double timestamp scheme, and noise pulse analysis.
