Evaluation of MODIS and Himawari-8 Low Clouds Retrievals Over the Southern Ocean With In Situ Measurements From the SOCRATES Campaign

Litai Kang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the consistency between three satellite cloud products and aircraft observations, finding that satellite observations tend to overestimate cloud droplet size in non-precipitating or lightly precipitating conditions, and underestimate it in heavy precipitation conditions. These biases ultimately affect the determination of liquid water path and number concentration.

Cloud-Nucleating Particles Over the Southern Ocean in a Changing Climate

Cynthia H. Twohy et al.

Summary: Stratocumulus clouds over the Southern Ocean are likely to contain fewer droplets and exist in a supercooled phase due to limited cloud-nucleating particles, with biogenic sulfur-based particles and organic ice nucleating particles playing major roles. As global warming leads to decreased sea ice, increased phytoplankton activity, and stronger winds near Antarctica, cloud nucleating particles may increase, making clouds in the region more reflective. Detailed modeling studies are necessary to verify this hypothesis due to the complexity of ocean-cloud-climate feedbacks in the Southern Ocean.

Evaluation of Cloud and Precipitation Simulations in CAM6 and AM4 Using Observations Over the Southern Ocean

Xiaoli Zhou et al.

Summary: This study evaluates cloud and precipitation simulations in CAM6 and AM4 global climate models using data collected from two coordinated campaigns over the Southern Ocean between Tasmania and Antarctica in January-February 2018. Results show that both models simulate observed cloud properties fairly well, but have biases in cloud base, cloud occurrence, and cloud optical thickness. Further investigation of microphysical biases in both models is needed.

Measurement report: Cloud processes and the transport of biological emissions affect southern ocean particle and cloud condensation nuclei concentrations

Kevin J. Sanchez et al.

Summary: The concentration of condensation nuclei and cloud condensation nuclei in the marine boundary layer of the Southern Ocean is affected by long-range transport of biogenic emissions from the Antarctic coast, precipitation scavenging, and cloud processing. Different combinations of high and low concentrations of CCN and CN create distinct regimes, with evidence of the impact of these processes on the observed variability.
