On the comparison of two mixed-mode I plus III fracture test specimens

A. Bahmani et al.

Summary: This study compared two test specimens, ENDB and ENDC, for measuring mixed-mode I+III fracture toughness. The loading type significantly affected the fracture parameters, with ENDC exhibiting more stable mixed-mode fracture but sensitivity to crack inclination angle rotation. The optimal crack length for measuring mixed-mode I+III fracture toughness was found in the ENDB specimen, while pure mode III fracture toughness was greater in the ENDC specimen. Various parameters, including T-stress, influenced the differences in fracture toughness values measured via both specimens.

Specimen type effect on measured low-temperature fracture toughness of asphalt concrete

N. Shahryari et al.

Summary: The study investigated the Mode I fracture resistance of two asphalt mixtures, showing that increasing the loading rate, reducing the test temperature, and adding LDPE additive can improve fracture resistance. Furthermore, the influence of specimen geometry and loading type on the measured critical stress intensity factors was observed, demonstrating the effect of specimen type on Mode I fracture behavior.

Influence of specimen geometry on mode I fracture toughness of asphalt concrete

Si Fuan et al.

Summary: Disc-shaped specimens are commonly used in determining the fracture toughness of asphalt mixture concrete. The SCB and ENDB specimens are tested using three-point bend setup, with consistent K-Ic values observed. Specimen thickness, loading rate, and test temperature all influence the fracture toughness and load carrying capacity of the asphalt mixture.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of various factors on top-down cracks in the multilayer pavement structure, finding significant differences between heterogeneous modeling and homogeneous simulation results. The position of the crack tip significantly affected stress intensity factors and T-stress.
