Processing routes, resulting microstructures, and strain rate dependent deformation behaviour of advanced high strength steels for automotive applications

Tarun Nanda et al.

Summary: The automotive industry is striving to achieve lightweight body-in-white structures to meet strict regulations on emissions and crash testing. Advanced high strength steels are increasingly used in the automotive industry due to their improved crashworthiness and formability at reasonable costs. The multi-phase microstructures of AHSS provide superior strength-ductility combination compared to conventional high-strength steels.

Carbon effect on hydrogen diffusivity and embrittlement in austenitic stainless steels

Kyung-Shik Kim et al.

Summary: The study revealed that carbon can alleviate the impact of hydrogen on the tensile properties of stainless steel, but increasing the carbon content does not significantly affect hydrogen diffusivity. Cracks induced by hydrogen mainly occur at grain boundaries and propagate inside grains, but are suppressed by grain boundaries.

Influence of iron oxides and calcareous deposits on the hydrogen permeation rate in X65 steel in a simulated groundwater

H. C. Ma et al.

Summary: The hydrogen permeation behavior of X65 steel in simulated Canadian groundwater was studied using a Devanathan-Stachurski cell. Without a palladium coating, the hydrogen permeation current was suppressed by oxide film growth on the steel, while applying a palladium coating required removal of air-formed oxide first. Deposition of CaCO3 and Mg(OH)2 on the charging side of the membrane increased hydrogen absorption, enhancing the permeation current.

Effect of microstructure on corrosion behavior of high strength martensite steel-A literature review

Li Wang et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the influence of microstructure on the corrosion behavior of high strength martensite steels, including pitting and intergranular corrosion. Factors such as precipitation, dislocation, and grain/lath boundaries are discussed as crack nucleation and hydrogen traps in these steels. Additionally, the beneficial effects of retained/reversed austenite on corrosion resistance and stress corrosion cracking sensitivity are explored, as well as ideas for designing new high strength martensite steels.

Summary: This study demonstrates the significance of the bainite fraction in dual-phase steel on its resistance to hydrogen embrittlement. Increasing the number of fine cementite particles in bainite can enhance the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of the steel.
