Deep neural network analysis - a paradigm shift for histological examination of health and welfare of farmed fish

Lene Sveen et al.

Summary: An AI model was trained to detect multi-class segmentation of skin from Atlantic salmon and produced reliable spatial measurements of all the successive skin layers. The results were highly correlated to manual measurements and showed variations in skin tissue abundance at different body sites. The AI model was further used to evaluate skin samples from commercially farmed Atlantic salmon, revealing dynamic behavior of the skin related to time, life stage, and operational events.

Stress Impairs Skin Barrier Function and Induces α2-3 Linked N-Acetylneuraminic Acid and Core 1 O-Glycans on Skin Mucins in Atlantic Salmon, Salmo salar

John Benktander et al.

Summary: The study revealed that stress can affect the skin barrier function of Atlantic salmon and lead to changes in mucin O-glycosylation. Both acute and chronic stress can increase the proportion of large O-glycan structures in fish.
