Targeting desmosomal adhesion and signalling for intestinal barrier stabilization in inflammatory bowel diseases-Lessons from experimental models and patients

Nicolas Schlegel et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis have a complex pathogenesis, with impaired intestinal barrier function being a key feature closely associated with clinical symptoms. Dsg2, a cadherin-type adhesion molecule of desmosomes, plays a distinct role in IBD pathogenesis by regulating intestinal barrier properties and is a promising target for preventing loss of barrier function in IBD patients.

The microbiome in inflammatory bowel diseases: from pathogenesis to therapy

Sheng Liu et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a global disease with accelerating incidence worldwide, and dysbiosis of gut microbiota has been consistently associated with IBD. Some alterations in microbiome may have protective or causative effects on IBD. Therapeutic approaches targeting microbiome are a promising strategy for alleviating and curing IBD.

An evaluation of the effects of probiotics on tumoral necrosis factor (TNF-α) signaling and gene expression

Angelica Vincenzi et al.

Summary: The search for functional foods containing probiotics has been growing due to the benefits they provide to health, but the mechanisms of actions of probiotics responsible for inhibition have not been completely explained. Probiotics might act through multiple mechanisms, especially by inhibiting IkB phosphorylation and degradation, thus preventing the translocation of NF-kB. Effects are strain-specific, with probiotics of the genus Lactobacillus playing an essential role in anti-inflammatory activity.

Intestinal Inflammation as a Dysbiosis of Energy Procurement: New Insights into an Old Topic

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease is associated with significant changes in microbiota and host metabolic energy supply and demand. Components of the microbiota play important roles in various biochemical pathways within and outside of the mucosa, and adjusting energy acquisition in the gut may be beneficial for disease treatment.
