Microalgae cultivation using palm oil mill effluent as growth medium for lipid production with the effect of CO2supply and light intensity

Prakash Bhuyar et al.

Summary: Malaysia is a major producer and exporter of palm oil, generating millions of tons of palm oil mill effluent (POME) annually. POME, a major environmental pollutant, also contains nutrients and minerals suitable for microbial-based applications like wastewater treatment and biofuel production. Cultivating microalgae in enriched POME has been explored as an effective method to utilize POME and increase biomass yield for applications like biodiesel production.

Influence of photodegradation on the removal of color and phenolic compounds from palm oil mill effluent by Arthrospira platensis

M. M. Azimatun Nur et al.

Summary: The study found that POME fractions influenced the growth rate, final biomass, COD, and color removal of A. platensis. By using central composite design (CCD) response surface methodology, it was optimized that low light and high initial phenolic compounds promoted the activity of A. platensis in degrading phenolic compounds. Additionally, the research showed that the degradation of phenolic compounds and color from POME was dominated by photodegradation at high irradiance, while A. platensis activity dominated at low light intensity.
