A FRACTAL MODEL FOR CAPILLARY FLOW THROUGH A SINGLE TORTUOUS CAPILLARY WITH ROUGHENED SURFACES IN FIBROUS POROUS MEDIA

Boqi Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, a fractal model for capillary flow through a single tortuous capillary with roughened surfaces in fibrous porous media was derived. The results of the model were found to be in agreement with existing models in the literature. It was observed that the imbibition height and mass of capillary rise decrease with increasing relative roughness, while the equilibrium time in the capillary decreases with increasing roughness. Additionally, the imbibition height and mass of capillary rise were found to increase with imbibition time.

Summary: Study shows that random frictional strength on interfaces results in variability in the global static friction. Increasing spatial correlation length on the interface causes lower global static friction, while smaller correlation length increases macroscopic strength and decreases variability.
