Prevalence and time trends of overweight, obesity and severe obesity in 447,925 Swedish adults, 1995-2017

Erik Hemmingsson et al.

Summary: The prevalence of overweight, obesity, and severe obesity in Swedish adults has increased significantly since 1995, with rates of 55.1%, 16.6%, and 4.2% in 2016/17, respectively. Factors associated with higher obesity prevalence include male gender, older age, lower education, and living in rural areas. The prevalence of severe obesity showed a greater increase compared to obesity and overweight between 1995 and 2017.

Summary: This study developed a fully automated method for muscle measurement on CT images and found that higher paraspinous skeletal muscle area and skeletal muscle density were associated with better survival in older men, but not in women.

Visceral obesity and incident cancer and cardiovascular disease: An integrative review of the epidemiological evidence

Erika Aparecida Silveira et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests a strong relationship between obesity, cancer, and cardiovascular disease risk, with visceral obesity potentially playing a more pro-oncogenic role than total body fat. However, controversial evidence exists regarding the impact of visceral obesity on CVD risk, especially with sex-specific and aging analyses. Further epidemiological studies stratified by sex and including older adults are needed to explore these associations.

Associations of Objectively Measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Time with the Risk of Stroke, Myocardial Infarction or All-Cause Mortality in 70-Year-Old Men and Women: A Prospective Cohort Study

Marcel Ballin et al.

Summary: The study found that every 30-min/day increment in LPA was associated with an 11% lower risk of CVD or all-cause mortality, while every 30-min/day increment in MPA was associated with a 36% lower risk. Additionally, every 1-h/day increment in ST increased the risk by 33%, but MPA could attenuate the increased risks associated with ST.
