Manipulating microcompartment operons to study mechanism and function

James W. Wilson

Summary: The gene systems encoding functional bacterial microcompartments (BMCs) are typically composed of 10-23 genes, which can be studied as whole operons or subsets for specific applications. Recent studies have shown the flexible modular nature of BMC operons/genes and the potential for transfer and functional expression across bacterial species. Various advanced techniques, such as recombineering, DNA synthesis technology, and advanced cloning techniques, have been creatively applied to study the mechanism and function of BMCs.
