Parasitic plant causes an ephemeral rainbow pattern in a reservoir bank

Giuliano Bonanomi et al.

Summary: The study found that the vegetation in different colored belts was related to the attack of the parasitic plant Cuscuta campestris, with no significant differences in soil chemistry among the three belts, supporting the important role of the parasitic plant in the formation of the pattern.

Remote sensing vs. field-based monitoring of agricultural terrace degradation

Anton Pijl et al.

Summary: The degradation of agricultural terraces poses a significant challenge to soil and water conservation in steep-slope viticulture. This study compared a remote sensing approach with a field-based method to monitor hydrological processes responsible for terrace degradation. The field-based approach used spatially measured Soil Moisture Content to identify saturation hotspots around damaged terraces, while the remote sensing approach utilized aerial imagery for terrain-based analysis and erosion modeling. The comparison of these two methods provided insights into understanding terrace damages and the potential for scalable monitoring using topsoil moisture content as an indicator.

The addition of biochar as a sustainable strategy for the remediation of PAH-contaminated sediments

Francesco Bianco et al.

Summary: Biochar is proposed as an innovative and sustainable technology for remediation of PAH-contaminated sediments, mainly through sorption mechanisms. The use of biochar can significantly improve the efficiency of PAH removal from sediments, especially when used in combination with multi-PAH systems and high dosages. Additionally, biochar has shown to decrease PAH degradation during bioaugmentation and phytoremediation of sediments, but can increase degradation when used with nitrate as an electron acceptor in low-temperature conditions.

Flow Resistance in Open Channel Due to Vegetation at Reach Scale: A Review

Antonino D'Ippolito et al.

Summary: This paper explores the impact of vegetation on water energy losses in riverbanks and flood areas, with computational models incorporating resistance coefficients and roughness evaluations. It reviews classical approaches and recent advancements in analytical methods for both rigid and flexible vegetation, highlighting drag coefficients and resistance laws. The study also briefly discusses the use of 3D numerical methods for assessing turbulence characteristics and the transport of sediments and pollutants, as well as the application of remote sensing for mapping riparian vegetation.

Predictive model of bulk drag coefficient for a nature-based structure exposed to currents

Alejandra Gijon Mancheno et al.

Summary: Mangrove vegetation provides natural protection against coastal hazards but has experienced a decline worldwide due to human activities. Bamboo structures are being used to create a sheltered environment for mangrove restoration, but their design lacks rules leading to mixed success rates. Developing a better understanding of how bamboo poles affect waves and currents is crucial for improving future designs and maximizing the efficacy of mangrove restoration efforts.

Drone and sensor technology for sustainable weed management: a review

Marco Esposito et al.

Summary: Weeds are a significant abiotic factor impacting agriculture globally, causing important yield loss. Integrated Weed Management with the use of drones enables efficient and environmentally beneficial Site-Specific Weed Management. The identification of weed patches through drone image acquisition and machine learning techniques can lead to the training of specific algorithms for weed removal by Autonomous Weeding Robots.

Factors controlling the asymmetry of soil moisture and vegetation dynamics in a hilly Mediterranean catchment

V Garcia-Gamero et al.

Summary: The study in southern Spain revealed that aspect influences the ecohydrological dynamics of an oak-woodland savanna, with north-facing slopes drying out earlier and having denser vegetation compared to south-facing slopes. The presence of deep weathered bedrock on the north-facing slope provides an additional water source for vegetation, while vegetation on the south-facing slope relies mainly on soil moisture.
