Contribution of food groups to energy, grams and nutrients-to-limit: the Latin American Study of Nutrition and Health/Estudio Latino Americano de Nutricion y Salud (ELANS)

Regina Mara Fisberg et al.

Summary: The study based on the ELANS data aimed to investigate the top sources of energy, nutrients-to-limit, and total gram amount consumed by Latin Americans. The findings showed that rice, yeast breads, and turnovers were the top sources of energy, while fruit drinks, other 100% juice, and rice were the most consumed in terms of total gram amount. Added sugars mainly came from other 100% juice and fruit drinks, while SFA mostly came from turnovers, cheese, and pizza. The top sources of Na included rice, soups, and rice mixed dishes. The identification of these sources is crucial for developing strategies to improve nutrient intake among this population.

Adherence to Food-Based Dietary Guidelines: A Systemic Review of High-Income and Low- and Middle-Income Countries

Ana Carolina B. Leme et al.

Summary: Research comparing adherence to food-based dietary guidelines between high-income (HIC) and low-and-middle-income countries (LMIC) is lacking. Findings show that almost 40% of populations in both HIC and LMIC do not adhere to their national FBDGs. Fruit and vegetable consumption was highest, but consumption of discretionary foods varied between HIC and LMIC. Grains and dairy were consumed below recommendations in both HIC and LMIC, while consumption of animal proteins, particularly red meat, exceeded recommendations. Individuals from both HIC and LMIC may not be meeting at least one dietary recommendation from their country's guidelines. Future health policies, behavioral-change strategies, and dietary guidelines should take these findings into consideration.
