Impact of sedentarism due to the COVID-19 home confinement on neuromuscular, cardiovascular and metabolic health: Physiological and pathophysiological implications and recommendations for physical and nutritional countermeasures

Marco Narici et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a sedentary lifestyle for many people, resulting in muscle wasting, reduced glucose homeostasis, and impaired aerobic capacity. Engaging in low to medium-intensity high volume resistive exercise, combined with a reduction in daily energy intake, can help mitigate these negative effects and preserve neuromuscular, metabolic, and cardiovascular health.

Obesity, eating behavior and physical activity during COVID-19 lockdown: A study of UK adults

Eric Robinson et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 crisis may have disproportionately impacted weight-related behaviors among UK adults, especially those with obesity. During the social lockdown, many participants reported negative changes in eating and physical activity behaviors, as well as experiencing barriers to weight management. Participants with higher BMI were particularly affected, showing lower levels of physical activity and diet quality, along with more frequent overeating. Reporting a decline in mental health due to the COVID-19 crisis was not associated with higher BMI, but was predictive of increased overeating and decreased physical activity during lockdown.

Patient Perceptions of Head and Neck Ambulatory Telemedicine Visits: A Qualitative Study

Vasiliki Triantafillou et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, telemedicine use in otolaryngology ambulatory visits has increased significantly. Patient satisfaction with telemedicine is important, with benefits including accessibility, cost savings, and time savings, while limitations include the inability to perform physical examinations. Patients were generally willing to participate in future remote visits if appropriate, highlighting the need for continued implementation of telemedicine in the specialty.

Being on hemodialysis during the COVID-19 outbreak: A mixed-methods' study exploring the impacts on dialysis adequacy, analytical data, and patients' experiences

Helena Sousa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on non-COVID-19 patients with ESRD undergoing in-center hemodialysis. The results showed a decrease in dialysis adequacy and serum albumin levels, and an increase in phosphorus levels during lockdown, along with negative psychosocial impacts. However, some patients utilized problem-focused and emotional strategies to cope with the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Summary: The study found that approximately one-fourth of previously well-controlled type 2 diabetic individuals experienced short-term metabolic worsening after the lockdown was lifted. These participants also had elevated serum triglycerides, which could predict the deterioration of glucose control.
