Heuristic study on the interaction between heat exchange and slow relaxation processes during wood moisture content changes

Wim Willems

Summary: The study investigates the interaction between the thermal rate-limiting effect and intrinsic slow relaxation processes in wood moisture diffusion. The results show that the thermal rate-limiting effect directly affects diffusion and all relaxation processes, effectively stretching the dynamic time response of wood moisture. The magnitude of this time-scaling effect is proportional to the coupling strength between heat and mass transfer, which increases progressively with relative humidity.

Thermal modification of wood-a review: chemical changes and hygroscopicity

Callum Hill et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the influence of cell wall moisture content during thermal modification process on the properties of thermally modified timber (TMT). It compares TMT modified under dry and wet conditions, analyzing the role of hydroxyl groups, cell wall polymer mobility, and crosslinking in sorption behavior. The study also raises questions regarding the role of OH groups in sorption behavior based on the changes observed in TMT after water leaching post-treatment.

Exponential decay analysis: a flexible, robust, data-driven methodology for analyzing sorption kinetic data

Summary: Exponential decay analysis is employed in this study to analyze sorption kinetics of various cellulose materials, providing a flexible and data-driven approach that yields robust results in relation to measurement uncertainties. This method can reliably describe the dominant time scales of sorption kinetics and offer a new way to evaluate the suitability of theoretical models for describing sorption kinetics.
