Investigation of the material resistance and moisture performance of pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens)

Miha Humar et al.

Summary: Forests are facing great pressure due to climate changes, with Mediterranean type forests projected to increase in importance. Pubescent oak is expected to gain ecological and economic significance in the region south of the Alps. The wood species contains high amounts of extractives, including a significant concentration of Gallic acid, contributing to its durability against wood decay fungi. The anatomical structure with a high frequency of tylosis results in effective water exclusion, leading to good performance in above-ground applications.

Modelling the Material Resistance of Wood-Part 3: Relative Resistance in above- and in-Ground Situations-Results of a Global Survey

Christian Brischke et al.

Summary: This study focused on durability-based designs with timber and utilized a material resistance model to predict decay rates in above-ground situations. The research surveyed laboratory and field test data globally to establish material-specific resistance dose values and adapt the model to in-ground exposure. The study demonstrated the relationship between decay rates in- and above-ground, the predictive power of laboratory indicators, and a method for incorporating these findings into a service life prediction tool.
