Loss of heat acclimation capacity could leave subterranean specialists highly sensitive to climate change

S. Pallares et al.

Summary: Physiological traits play a key role in determining the vulnerability of narrow range, highly specialized animals to climate change. Species from stable environments are predicted to have lower thermal tolerance breadths and thermal plasticity. Subterranean environments provide stable conditions for exploring these issues, with environmental variability increasing predictably from deep to shallow habitats.

Protura (Arthropoda: Hexapoda) in Slovenian caves

Loris Galli et al.

Summary: Protura, a small class of Hexapoda, is relatively poorly known and data on its occurrence in caves are limited. This paper discusses the occurrence and abundance of Protura in Slovenian caves, presenting new records for the country. Statistical analyses did not reveal significant differences in environmental conditions between caves with Protura and those without.

Forty-year natural history study of Bahalana geracei Carpenter, 1981, an anchialine cave-dwelling isopod (Crustacea, Isopoda, Cirolanidae) from San Salvador Island, Bahamas: reproduction, growth, longevity, and population structure

Jerry H. Carpenter

Summary: This study provides an in-depth investigation into the natural history of Bahalana geracei Carpenter, 1981, one of the 92 species of cave cirolanids in the world, focusing on population structure, composition, reproductive ecology, and longevity. The research reveals that these species have slow growth rates and long lifespans, with female individuals exhibiting significantly longer lifespans and larger sizes than males.
