Enhancement for magnetic field strength of a magnetohydrodynamic thruster consisting of permanent magnets

Yan-Hom Li et al.

Summary: This study designs a closed-loop magnetic circuit to increase the uniformity and intensity of the magnetic field using permeable materials. Different magnetic shields are tested to encase the MHD thruster to reduce magnetic leakage in seawater. Increasing the thickness of the stainless steel shell leads to higher propulsive force and speed, but increasing the distance between two shields decreases the magnetic field intensity.
