Eating disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine: an overview of risks and recommendations for treatment and early intervention

Marita Cooper et al.

Summary: Individuals with eating disorders are facing significant risks during the COVID-19 pandemic, including increased symptoms, limited treatment access, and negative effects of weight-stigmatizing social media messages. Changes in socialization, routine, and experiences of trauma globally may also hinder ED risk and recovery. This paper provides a brief review of relevant literature and offers suggestions for modifying interventions to address the unique challenges faced by individuals with EDs and providers in this public health crisis.

Obesity, eating behavior and physical activity during COVID-19 lockdown: A study of UK adults

Eric Robinson et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 crisis may have disproportionately impacted weight-related behaviors among UK adults, especially those with obesity. During the social lockdown, many participants reported negative changes in eating and physical activity behaviors, as well as experiencing barriers to weight management. Participants with higher BMI were particularly affected, showing lower levels of physical activity and diet quality, along with more frequent overeating. Reporting a decline in mental health due to the COVID-19 crisis was not associated with higher BMI, but was predictive of increased overeating and decreased physical activity during lockdown.

Eating in the lockdown during the Covid 19 pandemic; self-reported changes in eating behaviour, and associations with BMI, eating style, coping and health anxiety

Helen Coulthard et al.

Summary: This study examined self-reported changes in eating patterns during the UK lockdown, finding that increased consumption of high energy density snacks was associated with sex, eating habits, and health anxiety, while positive eating practices were linked to adaptive coping strategies. Emotional eating during the lockdown was correlated with higher BMI, previous emotional eating, and maladaptive coping strategies. Maladaptive coping strategies moderated the relationship between BMI and emotional eating during the lockdown, highlighting the importance of promoting adaptive coping strategies for improving health in similar situations.

Exploring changes in body image, eating and exercise during the COVID-19 lockdown: A UK survey

MacKenzie Robertson et al.

Summary: Early reports suggest that lockdown measures associated with the COVID-19 pandemic are negatively impacting people's mental health, leading to changes in eating habits and body dissatisfaction. Women are more likely to experience difficulties in regulating eating and worsening body image compared to men. Individuals with a current or past diagnosis of eating disorders face greater challenges in these aspects, even when compared to those with other mental health and developmental disorders.

Cinzia Cecchetto et al.

Summary: During the lockdown in Italy due to COVID-19, emotional and binge eating were influenced by factors like anxiety, depression, quality of personal relationships, and stress. Higher alexithymia scores were related to increased emotional eating, while higher BMI scores were associated with both increased emotional eating and binge eating. From Phase 1 to Phase 2, there was a decrease in binge and emotional eating behaviors.
