Vitamin D deficiency aggravates COVID-19: systematic review and meta-analysis

Marcos Pereira et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that vitamin D deficiency is associated with a higher prevalence in severe cases of COVID-19. Vitamin D insufficiency is also linked to increased hospitalization and mortality from COVID-19.

Perspective: Vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19 severity - plausibly linked by latitude, ethnicity, impacts on cytokines, ACE2 and thrombosis

J. M. Rhodes et al.

Summary: There is substantial evidence supporting a link between vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19 severity, although the evidence is indirect. Community-based placebo-controlled trials of vitamin D supplementation may be challenging, but further evidence may come from large cohort studies with prescribing data or serum 25(OH) vitamin D level assays. In the meantime, vitamin D supplementation is strongly recommended for individuals at risk of deficiency.

Obesity, vitamin D deficiency and old age a serious combination with respect to coronavirus disease-2019 severity and outcome

Hans K. Biesalski

Summary: Old age, obesity, and vitamin D deficiency are considered independent risk factors for severe courses of COVID-19. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in the infection pathway of the virus, and maintaining an adequate supply of vitamin D helps reduce the risk of severe COVID-19 processes.

Obesity a predictor of outcomes of COVID-19 hospitalized patients-A systematic review and meta-analysis

Preeti Malik et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis found a significant association between obesity and poor outcomes in COVID-19 patients, suggesting that obese individuals are at higher risk for severe disease and adverse results compared to non-obese patients. This study's results may provide important implications for the clinical management and future research on obesity and COVID-19.

Prevalence of malnutrition in coronavirus disease 19: the NUTRICOV study

Antoine Rouget et al.

Summary: Recent guidelines from the European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition emphasize the importance of addressing malnutrition in COVID-19 patients. A study evaluated the prevalence of malnutrition among hospitalized COVID-19 patients and found it to be associated with factors such as low BMI, dyslipidemia, reduced oral intake, and kidney function. Nutritional support is considered crucial in the care of COVID-19 patients with malnutrition.
