Obesity, eating behavior and physical activity during COVID-19 lockdown: A study of UK adults

Eric Robinson et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 crisis may have disproportionately impacted weight-related behaviors among UK adults, especially those with obesity. During the social lockdown, many participants reported negative changes in eating and physical activity behaviors, as well as experiencing barriers to weight management. Participants with higher BMI were particularly affected, showing lower levels of physical activity and diet quality, along with more frequent overeating. Reporting a decline in mental health due to the COVID-19 crisis was not associated with higher BMI, but was predictive of increased overeating and decreased physical activity during lockdown.

COVID-19 and the Demand for Online Food Shopping Services: Empirical Evidence from TaiwanJEL Codes

Hung-Hao Chang et al.

Summary: Using data from Taiwan's largest agri-food e-commerce platform, we found that the coronavirus pandemic led to an increase in demand for online food shopping services, especially for grains, fresh fruit and vegetables, and frozen foods. Sales and customer numbers increased, benefiting small farms over agribusinesses, and there is a possibility of increased sales concentration on niche products.

Food & meal decision making in lockdown: How and who has Covid-19 affected?

Sarah Snuggs et al.

Summary: The study found that during lockdown, individuals in the UK placed more importance on health, weight control, and mood when choosing their food, while familiarity was less important. Certain sub-groups, such as younger adults, parents, carers of children, and those living far from food shops, may face more challenges in future lockdowns. Further research with larger sample sizes is needed to draw more definitive conclusions.

Behavioral changes in patients with diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic

Miyako Kishimoto et al.

Summary: During the state of emergency period in the COVID-19 pandemic, changes in physical activity levels negatively affected glycemic control in diabetes patients. Maintaining or improving dietary habits could lead to better glycemic control, especially for those who engage in teleworking. Effective measures should be developed to promote exercise and dietary therapy for diabetes patients in such emergency situations.
