Adaptive phase field modelling of crack propagation in orthotropic functionally graded materials

Hirshikesh et al.

Summary: The adaptive phase field method is extended to model fracture in orthotropic functionally graded materials, using a recovery type error indicator and quadtree decomposition for adaptive mesh refinement. Results show an increase in stiffness and maximum force with increasing material orientation angle, and a substantial gain in fracture resistance when toughness increases along the crack propagation path. The study emphasizes the importance of considering material gradients and orthotropy in fracture behavior analysis in orthotropic FGMs.

Phase field predictions of microscopic fracture and R-curve behaviour of fibre-reinforced composites

Wei Tan et al.

Summary: The computational framework accurately captures the crack path, interface debonding, and load versus displacement response of fiber-reinforced polymer composites. Sensitivity analysis on the crack growth resistance curve to matrix fracture toughness and fiber-matrix interface properties, as well as the influence of porosity on the R-curve, provide insights into microscopic fracture mechanisms and pave the way for efficient design of high fracture toughness composites.

Phase field modelling of fracture and fatigue in Shape Memory Alloys

Marlini Simoes et al.

Summary: A new phase field framework is presented for modeling fracture and fatigue in Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs), showcasing its potential in capturing main fracture features associated with SMAs. The model demonstrates capabilities in handling crack tip fields and complex cracking phenomena, such as unstable crack growth and mixed-mode fracture. Additionally, the framework is extended to fatigue to capture crack nucleation and propagation in biomedical stents using nitinol SMAs.

A phase field formulation for dissolution-driven stress corrosion cracking

Chuanjie Cui et al.

Summary: In this study, a new theoretical and numerical framework for modelling mechanically-assisted corrosion in elastic-plastic solids is presented. The model successfully captures pitting and stress corrosion cracking, as well as the pit-to-crack transition. For the first time, the role of mechanical straining as the electrochemical driving force is incorporated. The use of a phase field paradigm helps in accurately approximating complex SCC morphologies.

Summary: This study proposes a phase field approximation of fracture for functionally graded materials, incorporating the characteristic length scale as a material parameter, and conducts a comprehensive sensitivity analysis on various model parameters. The research demonstrates the Gamma-convergence of the model, as well as the limitation of fracture energy and elastic energy by homogeneous constituents.
