Lesion network mapping demonstrates that mind-wandering is associated with the default mode network

Carissa L. Philippi et al.

Summary: Functional neuroimaging research has consistently linked brain structures within the default mode network (DMN) and frontoparietal network (FPN) with mind-wandering. Lesion network mapping analysis in this study showed that lesions affecting the DMN and FPN were associated with diminished mind-wandering, with the left inferior parietal lobule within the DMN showing the strongest association with reduced mind-wandering.

Probing the neural signature of mind wandering with simultaneous fMRI-EEG and pupillometry

Josephine M. Groot et al.

Summary: The study found that compared to task-focused attention, the neural characteristics of mind wandering include weaker activity in the default mode network, elevated activity in its anticorrelated network, stronger functional coupling between these networks, widespread increase in alpha, theta, delta frequency power, predominantly reduced amplitudes of late event-related potentials, and larger baseline pupil size. Particularly, information contained in dynamic interactions between large-scale cortical networks can predict transient changes in attentional focus.

How to Interpret Resting-State fMRI: Ask Your Participants

Javier Gonzalez-Castillo et al.

Summary: Resting-state fMRI reveals brain dynamics in an unconstrained environment where subjects let their minds wander freely, navigating a rich space of cognitive and perceptual states. How ongoing experience influences rsfMRI summary metrics is unclear, but may uniquely contribute to differences within and between subjects. To understand this influence, standardized, temporally resolved, scientifically validated first-person descriptions of experiences are necessary.

Integration and segregation across large-scale intrinsic brain networks as a marker of sustained attention and task-unrelated thought

Agnieszka Zuberer et al.

Summary: Sustained attention is a fundamental cognitive process associated with mind wandering and task-unrelated thoughts. Using fMRI, it was found that optimal sustained attention involves enhanced segregation and reduced integration of information processing across large-scale brain networks, while mind wandering is linked to suboptimal information processing in specific subsystems of the attention network model.
