Multiphysics modeling and uncertainty quantification of tribocorrosion in aluminum alloys

Kaiwen Wang et al.

Summary: The research developed a finite element based multiphysics model to analyze the synergistic effects of mechanical and corrosion properties on tribocorrosion degradation mechanisms. Residual stress near the wear track edge led to concentrated corrosion current, causing non-uniform surface corrosion and stress-corrosion coupling which affected the tribocorrosion rate. Predictive tribocorrosion rate maps were generated based on material properties, showing that metals with specific properties are most resistant to tribocorrosion.

Ultrahigh tribocorrosion resistance of metals enabled by nano-layering

Wenbo Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that nanostructured metallic multilayers (NMMs) exhibit ultrahigh tribocorrosion resistance due to abundant interfaces and nanoscale chemical modulation. The experimental and computational study provides guidance for future material selection and design of multilayered and multi-phase metals for use under extreme environment. Through nanolayering, the surface work function of Al was increased while Cl adatoms adsorb less strongly than that on pure Al, reducing surface reactivity and pitting susceptibility.
