Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 through breast milk and breastfeeding: a living systematic review

Elizabeth Centeno-Tablante et al.

Summary: Limited information is available on potential mother-to-child transmission of COVID-19, particularly through breast milk. Current evidence does not support the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 through breast milk. Further studies with longer follow-up periods are needed to gather data on infant feeding practices and viral presence in breast milk.

Safety and immunogenicity of an inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, BBIBP-CorV: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 1/2 trial

Shengli Xia et al.

Summary: The inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, BBIBP-CorV, demonstrated safety and immunogenicity in two age groups. Humoral responses against SARS-CoV-2 were induced in all vaccine recipients by day 42. A two-dose immunisation with 4 mu g vaccine on days 0 and 21 or days 0 and 28 achieved higher neutralising antibody titres compared to other dosing schedules.

Successful Treatment of Pregnant and Postpartum Women With Severe COVID-19 Associated Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome With Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

Jairo H. Barrantes et al.

Summary: Limited data exists on the use of ECMO in pregnant and peripartum women with COVID-19 ARDS, but a case series showed high maternal survival rates with ECMO support for severe ARDS. This highlights the importance of ECMO support for pregnant and postpartum patients during the pandemic.

Summary: Despite the surge in COVID-19 treatment studies, a consistent proportion continue to exclude pregnant women, with many treatments under evaluation having low or no safety concerns during pregnancy. Urgent inclusion of pregnant women in clinical treatment trials is needed to identify effective COVID-19 treatments for this population.

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal and perinatal outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Barbara Chmielewska et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes, leading to increased rates of stillbirth, maternal death, surgically managed ectopic pregnancies, and postpartum depression. Disparities exist between high-resource and low-resource settings, emphasizing the urgent need for prioritizing safe, accessible, and equitable maternity care in response to this pandemic and future health crises.
