Optical Fiber Technologies for Nanomanipulation and Biodetection: A Review

Yuchao Li et al.

Summary: Optical manipulation and detection of nanoscale biospecimen using micro/nano optical fibers have advantages over traditional lens-based free-space techniques due to their compact structure, flexibility, high sensitivity, and sub-diffraction-limit confinement. This review covers recent advances in nanoscale manipulation and biological detection with optical fibers, including applications for biological exploration like nanoparticle delivery and detection, single-molecule trapping and sensing, and single-cell manipulation and analysis, aiming to highlight current trends and future directions in this field.

Proof of Concept for a Quick and Highly Sensitive On-Site Detection of SARS-CoV-2 by Plasmonic Optical Fibers and Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

Nunzio Cennamo et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has prompted the need for rapid, highly sensitive detection of the virus. A specific molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) receptor combined with an optical sensor has been designed to achieve this, with preliminary results showing higher sensitivity and faster response times compared to RT-PCR.

A review on simple and highly sensitive plastic optical fiber probes for bio-chemical sensing

Nunzio Cennamo et al.

Summary: The review examines bio-chemical label-free sensing applications using receptors and multimode plastic optical fibers (POFs), focusing on different types of POF intrinsic sensors and receptors used in transmission mode. It compares the structures and mechanisms of different POF probes, as well as detailing the advantages and disadvantages of various chemical and biological receptors combined with POF probes. The study also discusses future developments in biochemical sensors with multimode POFs, specifically in relation to monitoring specific receptors using intensity variation techniques and plasmonic phenomena.

Optical Detection of CoV-SARS-2 Viral Proteins to Sub-Picomolar Concentrations

Tamsyn Stanborough et al.

Summary: The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 in late 2019 led to a global pandemic in 2020, highlighting the need for more effective ways of detecting viral infections. This study investigated three optical techniques for quantifying the binding of recombinant SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to surface-immobilized oligonucleotide aptamers, with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy showing the highest sensitivity for detecting spike protein. These results demonstrate the potential of SERS-based aptasensors for rapid, point-of-use antigen detection systems.
