Local Transient Jamming in Stress Relaxation of Bulk Amorphous Polymers

Ji-Ping Wang et al.

Summary: Research shows that bulk amorphous polymers undergo stretching and parallel alignment under loading stress, with intermolecular cooperation slowing down the subsequent stress relaxation process. Through simulations, a transient state of stretch-coil coexistence among polymers in stress relaxation process was identified, revealing an entropy barrier for stretch-coil transition of partial polymers. The unique microscopic mechanism of intermolecular cooperation in polymer stress relaxation explains the high viscosity in bulk amorphous polymers due to hydrodynamic interactions.
